Analysis of Previous Students Work

Read All About It - Emeli Sande

The music video was shot using a black and white effect. This effect has connotes sadness and suggests that there might be an emotional theme to the music video. The black and white effect also show that the video has a serious issue or message. This video is about bullying which means that the black and white effect and the newspapers in the background fit with the theme of the video. It also shows the seriousness of the videos message. However, at certain points in the video colour has been used. This creates a binary opposite as it is showing black and white and colour. The colour connotes that particular shot or scene is a happier compared to the rest of the video. The binary opposite could also be happy and sad. During the shots where it shows the protesters with posters and signs it looks like it has been shot using a handheld camera. This gives the idea that a camera crew could be filming this scene. This would fit with the previous shot as it shows the girl turning on the TV. This is effective as it is showing how many people are behind the videos message.

The shot where the chorus begin show the girl sitting down in a room full of newspapers. There are news papers covering the walls and floor, this is effective as the lyrics in the song's chorus are "read all about it". When those lyrics are said the girl is looking around the room at the different newspaper articles. This is creative as it is a way to visually show the chorus. In this part of the video a high camera angle has been used, this is so that the girl feels small and helpless when she is reading about what is going on.

However, there is one criticism that i would make about this video. The criticism is about the lip syncing. I think that the lip sync isn't being pronounced properly. This suggests that the actor used in the video isn't very confident. This made the video seem less powering as you can only just make out what she is singing. In the original video by Emeli Sande's we can see clearly what she is singing as she makes sure to over pronounce her lip syncing. This makes the lyrics seem powerful and more meaningful.

Overall, i would give this video an B grade. This was because the filming and editing was excellent. However, the only thing that was a bit disappointing was the lip syncing.

Daylight - Matt and Kim

There are a lot of things that are good with this music video. The video has been filmed in colour which shows that it is a happy song and video. The editing is fast paced which fits with the upbeat song.

Lots of different camera angles have been used in the same scene this is good as it makes the video more interesting. This is because some shots may look like point of view shots, close up shots can show his emotions which in this video are happy emotions. It also means that you might be able to see the whole scene and what's going on which makes the video seem more 3D. The creator has also used lot of different shots. These shots show the scenery or shots that are of other things. This is so that the video isn't just a lip syncing video or a video of the actor. This is creative as each shot links to the next, usually by the location being the same or the lyrics link to what's going on in the shot or next shot.

A scene which i thought was interesting was the chorus scene where the lyrics are "Cause in the daylight anywhere feels like home" this is because the shot shows a montage of houses until the last word of the lyric is read. When the word home is said the montage stops on a door which is the actors home. I found this effective as i thought it was a great way to visualise the lyrics. Another part of the video i thought was interesting was how the video almost started and ended the same. It started and ended with the front door being closed. I thought this was effective as it was a good way to visually show the lyrics.

Overall, i think that i would give this music video and A grade as the video only has a small issue. The editing and filming is excellent. Another reason why i would give this video an A grade is because I think that it tells a story.

Something else which i thought was creative was when the camera focuses on different points in the scene. This is noticeable in the payphone scene as the focus is on the phone box then it focuses on the phone itself. This is effective as it could be a way of telling the audience what they need to focus on in that particular scene. Another However, there is one small issue with the video and that is that the lip syncing is off in a few places. From watching the video several times this is the only issue that i can find with it.

Learning Comment

From doing this piece of research i have learnt what makes a good music video and what kind of songs are good to use when making the video. I have learnt that narrative videos are better and easier to make than performance videos. I know that some of the visuals in the video have been used so they are linked to the lyrics. I think this is effective and will hopefully use this idea in my video.
