The A Team - Ed Sheeran
This song is narrative based rather than performance based, this means that the main focus of the video is on what is going on (what is the story behind it). The narrative of this music video is sad as it is showing the protagonist who is a homeless person selling herself to make some money so that she can live. The music video shows the girl looking sad for the entire video which reinforces the narrative of the video. We also see the protagonist in the video on the streets with a sleeping bag. This reinforces the fact that she is homeless. In one part of the video we can see the girl taking drugs. This could suggest that the girl is trying to escape from her life as she doesn't enjoy it. This is known as escapism. There are close up shots used in the video to show her emotions. This links with Goodwins theory about how close ups are important as the audience can identify the "star persona" of the lead singer. The video was filmed in black and white which is a good was to show that the video will have a serious message and that the message and narrative of the video will be sad. Low key lighting has also been used to create a certain atmosphere and mood in this case it is sadness. It is clear that Goodwin's theory of relationships between lyrics and music has been used in the video.
Cheer Up London - Slaves
This song is based on performance rather than the narrative. The idea for this song was thought of on a train as Isaac Holomon (the one in the red t shirt at the start of the video) would always shout it when he was on the London underground. This suggests that the people on the London underground are unhappy or grumpy most of the time. The video for Cheep Up London by Slaves was shot in colour this is so that you know the song has a happy message. The song is all about how miserable the people of London are and how they need to cheer up. The music video has lots of props and actors who are trying to "cheer up" london. In this video we can see a lot of choreography being used. It is being used to emphasise the lyrics "Cheer up London" this is because dancing is seen as a happy thing that people do. In the video we can see lots of people such as the ice cream man giving them ice cream to give to Londoners trying to help cheer up London as they are getting involved in someway. I think the song's message is both a happy and a sad message which is why I think it is good that it is in colour as they're trying to cheer people up.
Paradise - Coldpay
The music video for Paradise by Coldplay is a narrative video. This is because it is telling a story. The story of this music video is about an elephant who manages to escape from a zoo. The video suggests that the elephant has escaped to try and find paradise. This suggests that the elephant is looking for escapism. The video for paradise follows the same plot as a film this is because it has a beginning a middle and an end. At the start of the music video it says "Parlophone Records presents" it also then continues to say "Coldplay in this is a code and convention of a movie. The camera angles used are effective as it shows you the setting and what is going on in the shot. This music video goes against Todorov's Equilibrium theory due to the fact that there is no part where the equilibrium being disturbed.
Bitter Sweet Symphony - The Verve
The video for Bitter Sweet Symphony by The Verve is a performance based video. The video consist of someone walking down the street singing. During the video we can see that people try to get in his way or interrupt him however, he doesn't move at all he still remains walking towards the camera. In the video we can see whenever someone is in front of him he will push past them and walk into them. The camera angles used in the video are rather basic as medium, long shots and close ups. The long and medium shots are done to show his clothes and to show that he isn't moving when people get in his way. The close ups are done to show his facial expressions and to show him singing the song. We can see that this video doesn't follow Todorov's narrative theory as there is nothing happening which means that the equilibrium cannot be disrupted at all.
Learning Comment
From doing this task I have learnt what I want to do with my music video. I have learnt the difference between narrative and performance videos. I have learnt that different genres of music will have a different style of music video. I have realised that some pop artists go for a sadder message (e.g A Team by Ed Sheeran) compared to rock music which generally has a more positive message (e.g Cheep Up London - Slaves). I have also learnt and realised that some pop videos are about escapism because they dislike the lives that they are living.
